If you are interested in blogging, you must have come across bloggers who are earning thousand of dollars through affiliate marketing.
Affiliate Marketing has the potential to make you six figure income and help you quit your 9-5 job.
But, there’s one mistake most of the bloggers make while referring affiliate products.
And what’s that, you ask? To not mask the affiliate links.
Masking affiliate links mean to change the actual referral URL with a nice looking URL.
There are three primary advantages of masking affiliate links –
1. You can keep track of clicks.
2. Your affiliate links much cleaner and professional.
3. It increases the Click Through Rate (more on this below).
For example, if you are promoting an affiliate link of EverNote, then by default it will look like this
However, it is cluttered and doesn’t give a nice impression.
On the other hand, if the same link is masked as https://blogcharge.com/go/evernote/ then it gives a more personal touch and looks clean.
How Masking Affiliate Link increase CTR?
Click-through rate (CTR) is the ratio of users who click on a particular link to the number of total users who view a page.
It can be calculated using a simple formula.
CTR = Clicks/Impressions*100
When you mask a cluttered affiliate link into a simple and personal link which is branded with your blog, it automatically gives a good impression on visitors.
Ask yourself which of the above two link would you be more willing to click? The one which clearly shouts that it is an affiliate link or the one which looks like a recommended product.
If you hover over this link, then you can see that I am recommending you MyThemeShop.
How to Mask Affiliate Links
It is a simple and straightforward way. There are many free as well paid plugins which provide this functionality.
But, the one I use and recommend is Affiliate Links Lite, which is available for free.
You can install this plugin by downloading it from WordPress.org or searching and installing from your WordPress Dashboard.
How to Use Affiliate Links Lite
#1. After you have installed and activated the plugin, you will see an extra option of affiliate link in your left sidebar of the dashboard.
#2. Click on it and you will get your affiliate link panel. To add a new link, click on ‘Add New Link‘ button.
#3. On the first box, enter the title of your link, for example, SiteGround Hosting. Do not forget to customize the permalink, according to your need.
#4. Next, enter your target URL i.e. your original affiliate link.
You can also add a link description to it which helps you distinguish between different links.
#5. Leave rest of the setting as they are and hit ‘publish‘ the link.
#6. Now to use the link you can either copy it from affiliate links panel, or you can directly embed links through your WordPress writing area as shown below.
As you may have noticed, by default there is a ‘go‘ word after your URL in the masked link. It is known as affiliate link base.
If you want to change it, then go to Affiliate Links > Settings.
#7. Now modify the Affiliate Link Base to anything you like. Most popular ones are recommended, refer, suggest, etc.
I hope in this article I have explained the process to mask affiliates link.
Still, if you have any queries then let me know via comments. Do share if you have used any better plugin for masking affiliate links.
